Jazz Jordan Speaks!!

As many of you know about me, I’m a bookworm!  So much so that I finished my favorite series in Urban literature are   Off Camera Affair and Lust & Hip Hop by Jazz Jordan. I’m starting a book club soon so be on the look out. Well after finishing the series I reached out to Jazz and she graciously took the time oit to grant an interview!!! Get ready because Detroit finest doesn’t hold back.

For the new readers would you mind giving them a brief introduction? Tell them about yourself and your background.

I always tell people that Jazz Jordan is my sexy persona…like how Beyoncé has Sasha Fierce. I’m a mom, a wife, a sister, a daughter and a lover of Italian food and red wine. I also love soul food too; I guess that’s why I make so many references to fried chicken and collard greens in my books.

Now I see you’re from Detroit, my dad’s hometown before moving Grand Rapids in his teens. Let me be first to say it’s great seeing an author putting Detroit on the map. Yes people it’s more than just Cars and Motown .

How does it feel receiving the love from other readers especially from the Motor City?

My readers always fuel me. They keep me inspired. When I get a review or an email from a fellow Detroiter complimenting me on my authenticity, it makes me feel like I’m on the right track. I love the D! Even though Detroit gets a bad wrap, this city is full of interesting and inspirational characters.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

I have always been an avid reader. As a child, I read books by Alice Walker and Alex Haley. I got my hands on some Terry McMillian books when I was a teenager. I started by writing short stories but I always wanted to write a novel. When I finished my first book “Off Camera Affair 1”, it felt like a miracle. I was so happy to accomplish a goal that seemed nearly impossible when I started.

Can you share a little about Lust and Hip Hop The Ms. Mogul Series with us?

Lust & Hip Hop (The Ms. Mogul Series)” is my new series. It takes place in one of my favorite places in the world…New York City! It’s full of drama, sex, and plenty of juicy surprises. The series follows an unexpected love story between a sista who’s an executive at a Fortune 500 company and the suave and sexy king of hip hop. I know a lot of good girls fantasize about bad boys and this series puts takes that premise to the next level.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

I love a variety of authors including Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, Sista Souljah, Bernice McFadden, Iceberg Slim, John Grisham, and Dean Koontz. Even though they all write in different genres, I love that they all have an authentic voice. This is what I always strive to achieve in my stories.

What was the hardest part of writing your books?

It’s not easy to make time to write in between work demands, and the demands of being a wife and a mother. Writing paragraphs in between cooking dinner and checking work emails takes patience and a sense of humor.

Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

I learned that writing is an organic process. It’s always helpful for me to have an outline for my novels to have an idea of where the story is going, but I’ve found that when I’m in the rhythm of writing, the story sometimes takes me in a different direction. It’s almost like the characters come to life on the screen and it’s so exciting to just let the story flow.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

My advice to writers is to write everyday. Even if you only have time to write a paragraph a day, you should still write something no matter what. Eventually, you will have a complete novel. When you finish the first one, the second one will be a little easier. As you continue, it will become more of a natural part of you until you will feel strange if you don’t write everyday. (I even try to write everyday on vacation – even if I just text myself a sentence or two.)

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I am so grateful for my readers. Without them, there would be no me. I want to thank my readers for supporting me on this exciting journey to fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a novelist.

What were the challenges in bringing Off Camera Affair and Lust and Hip Hop to life?

The biggest challenge with bringing my novels to life was making time to write. The writing part was a lot of fun!

While you were writing, did you ever feel as if you were one of the characters?

I know this may sound strange, but I embody all of my characters as I write them (almost like an actress playing a role.)

Now I must ask, if you get a chance to bring Off Camera Affair to a TV Series or Film who would you pick to play the characters? (Try not to laugh but I swear for Deandre Grant I would pick Tyrese and Pooch Hall for Ace just saying)

I would love to turn “Off Camera Affair” into a movie or TV series. I agree with you, I think Tyrese would be a great Deandre Grant. I also like Pooch Hall for Ace, but I would consider casting Allen Payne. I would love to see Kenya Moore in the role of Kai Lewis. She’s from the D and she could bring some sexiness and swag to the character.

What’s the most rewarding part of writing for you?

The most rewarding part of writing is connecting to readers who enjoy my work. There are no words to describe my happiness when I get an email from a fan or a positive review on one of my books.

Remembering Whitney Houston!

Whitney Elizabeth Houston tragically died three years ago today. In addition while the world is mourning the death of an icon, many are also praying for her daughter Bobbi Kristina.  No official confirmation on her condition being that the news and blogs have been reporting every morbid and often crazy scenario known to mankind. Many like myself,  wait on official word from family and NOT SOURCES.

What’s more troubling to me is that some make shift prophets are using Bobbi Kristina condition as PR for their ministry.  May God seek a perfect punishment for your greedy and disgusting behavior.
